What is xG
It may come as a surprise to learn that xG has, in fact, been around for a number of years now.
Yet it has only really started coming into the public consciousness in the last couple of years.
In short, xG stands for “Expected Goals” and it is a measure of the quality of any given shot on goal.
What Is The Probability Of A Given Shot Resulting In A Goal?
To put it another way, what is the probability of a given shot resulting in a goal.
As you would expect, a shot from the six yard box with an open goal will have a far higher probability than a long range shot from outside the box.
However, in most instances it can be far more nuanced than that.
How is xG Calculated – Simplified
An xG model uses historical information from thousands of shots with similar characteristics to estimate the likelihood of a goal being scored.
Every short will be given a rating between 0 and 1.
For example, if a shot was rated as 0.10 then it would be expected, on average, that this shot, would result in one goal for every ten shots of the same type.
As football traders, this insight could prove incredibly useful.
We are all familiar with using the Shots on Target metric as one of our sign posts for a potential goal.
The more SOTs there have been, the more we expect a goal to come soon.
So….
Is xG the Holy Grail for football traders?
In short, the answer is no.
Is it useful? Yes, absolutely!
It is very beneficial and can provide helpful insights and positive indicators to build into our match analysis when considering a trade.
