Kris Brown – AKA MLS Card Guy – is our resident serious Major League Soccer expert.
Kris’s passion for the MLS really took off during the 2018 season in which he was a part of the team at DC United that opened Audi Field and welcomed Wayne Rooney to the MLS. He is now in his second season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL. Kris likes to follow D.C United, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Atlanta.
His favorite player in the MLS is Luciano Acosta, but past favorites include Clint Dempsey and Kevin Paredes. The most iconic game he attended came at Audi field against Orlando in 2018, Wayne Rooney famously chased down an Orlando player who was racing towards an open DC goal, expertly tackled the ball away to save the draw, then unleashed a laser from midfield that Acosta headed in to complete the hat trick and seal the win.
There is always something that you need to know before we jump into things.
This week: US U20 team continues to dominate in Honduras, next up is the round of 16 against Nicaragua on Saturday, then assuming they win that, it’s likely a date with Costa Rica with a berth in the U20 World Cup on the line. Long story short, all those players missing last week are still missing this week, with the addition of Obed Vargas who will join the US team for the knockouts. Canada is also into the Knockout round.
Additionally, there are fewer and fewer teams left in the Open Cup. NYCFC and New York played a very fast, very physical game at Red Bull Arena with the hosts annihilating the defending champs. Both teams are rotation risks for this weekend, but Red Bull travel across the country to play LAFC. Sporting Kansas City coasted to a 6-0 win against third tier Union Omaha. They should be at full strength for the weekend after an easy evening. LA Galaxy were shocked by second tier Sacramento Republic, but their game against San Jose was canceled this weekend.
Finally, Nashville and Orlando are playing in the final Open Cup game next Wednesday. I wouldn’t expect rotation but just keep an eye on it. Lets not forget our Canadian teams. The Canadian Championship Semi Finals were held this midweek with Toronto rolling 4-0 over Montreal, and Vancouver cruising past York United 2-1. There are quite a few games in the league next midweek, but I wouldn’t expect rotation in anticipation of those. Teams may look to do some rotation during those midweek games as the next weekend is a very odd schedule (Some teams play on July 4th which is a Monday). Finally, let’s talk about some matchups.
MLS Betting Tips – Week 16
MLS Betting – Game Week 16 Preview
Seattle vs Sporting Kansas City
Sporting just won 6-0 in the midweek against Union Omaha, maybe that will kick start their offense? Well unfortunately this ain’t Union Omaha. Seattle is rolling in MLS play. Despite the draw against LAFC last weekend they were the better team against the Supporters Shield leaders. Now they play a team who is 2 points above the bottom despite playing 2 more games. One interesting note, SKC has not scored in the first 20 minutes of a match this season, and they have only conceded 2 in 17 matches so far. After the first 20 minutes they tend to crumble as only San Jose has conceded more goals than SKC. Expect Seattle to take control early and not give it up. There may be value on a 2+ goal Seattle win.
Montreal Impact vs Charlotte
Looks up notes from last week. Ohh yeah, Charlotte is a terrible road team. They have only gotten 1 point on the road all season long. Oh wait hold on 2 points (grrrrr). Montreal looked pretty poor against Austin without Djorde Mihalovic, but this is still a tough team to beat at home. Charlotte won’t go from 1 point on the road all year to back to back results right?

Los Angeles FC vs New York Red Bull
Make no mistake, this is a heavyweight fight. Both these teams will be serious challengers for the ultimate prize at the end of the season. However, New York was in a dog fight in the midweek and now have to fly across the country while LAFC sit at home and rest. The sudden Carlos Vela drama also plays into the storyline here. Technically, Vela is out of contract after the Dallas game in the midweek. What seemed like a done deal on an extension apparently was not done. Will LAFC be able to focus on a dangerous Red Bull press with this cloud hanging over
them. Which is more dangerous to a team: physical fatigue or mental fatigue? No read on this game from me but a must watch if you enjoy the league. It’s at 8:00 PM in England.
Philadelphia Union vs New York City
The other heavyweight fight this week, the odds certainly reflect the midweek chaos from NYCFC. The defending champs are the pretty clear class of the East for me but they crumbled against New York Red Bulls mentally. The 2 red cards from wednesday night don’t carry over to MLS play but the frustration might. This is the biggest test Nick Cushing has faced as manager of this team. I would have had a ton of confidence in NYCFC to bounce back under Ronny Diela but we need to see if the interim coach has the same skill. From a Philly perspective, they are still missing all of their impact players off the bench to the U20 championship. Do they have the big punch at the end to knock out the champs? This game is filled with great stats, Philly have never beaten NYCFC twice in a row, 3 losses and 2 draws in 5 previous attempts. Union have drawn 7 of the last 8, the 2009 LA Galaxy are the only team in MLS history to draw 8 out of 9 (They ended up losing the MLS Cup on PKs). This is the first time since 2011 that two teams on unbeaten runs of 8 or more will square off in league play. Philadelphia has not allowed a goal from outside the box in its last 54 MLS games (translation Andre Blake is really good at soccer). After all that I think I’m going to lean NYCFC has too much talent on their side of the field to bet against them.
Vancouver vs New England
If you didn’t know, Jon and I have started a betting podcast in which we preview the weekend’s games called That Betting Podcast with Predictology. This is the one game that we disagree on. The numbers point to a resurgent New England team as the value play. However, I think the impact of Andres Cubas shouldn’t be underestimated. The 3 million dollar man is exactly the destroyer in the middle Vancouver was lacking. Watching him vs Carles Gil will be fascinating stuff. Also, since returning to BC Place last August Vancouver is 11-3-2 at home with both losses to Portland in rivalry games. That’s more home points than any other team in the MLS over that span. Give me the Caps to squeak one out 2-1.
