Kris Brown – AKA MLS Card Guy – is our resident serious Major League Soccer expert.
Kris’s passion for the MLS really took off during the 2018 season in which he was a part of the team at DC United that opened Audi Field and welcomed Wayne Rooney to the MLS. He is now in his second season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL. Kris likes to follow D.C United, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Atlanta.
His favorite player in the MLS is Luciano Acosta, but past favorites include Clint Dempsey and Kevin Paredes. The most iconic game he attended came at Audi field against Orlando in 2018, Wayne Rooney famously chased down an Orlando player who was racing towards an open DC goal, expertly tackled the ball away to save the draw, then unleashed a laser from midfield that Acosta headed in to complete the hat trick and seal the win.
WE. ARE. BACK! It’s a full week of MLS action for the first time in what seems like forever. What a time to be alive! A few news and notes before we jump in for this week. Keep in mind that nobody told the Vancouver Whitecaps that they were supposed to be on break. Wins over SKC and RSL started a great “break” for Vancouver before they got smoked against Seattle in the midweek. This is the 3rd time this season Vancouver has lost by 3 or more and 2nd time they have lost by 4. It may be a trend at this point, so if you love to bet long odds maybe think about taking a big margin against Vancouver. Secondly, New England took most of their break off but they came back early and will be playing their 3rd game in 8 days this weekend. Watch for rotation and be ready to take advantage when lineups come out. Finally the CONCACAF U-20 championship starts this weekend. The US team has a bunch of regular contributors in the league (Cade Cowell, Caden Clark, Paxten Aaronson, Quinn Sullivan, Noah Allen and more). It’s a very important tournament as it is the qualifier for the Olympics in 2024 and the U-20 World Cup next year. Just keep in mind this is a long tournament so slightly downgrade teams like Philly, San Jose and maybe even New York over the coming weeks. Now we are ready to get into the games for this week:
MLS Betting Tips – Week 15
MLS Betting – Game Week 15 Preview
Seattle vs LAFC
What a tasty game to get the weekend started. The preseason MLS favorite vs the current Supporters Shield winners. Seattle has won 4 of 5 since winning the Champions League, but they face a team that is 6-2-5 (W-D-L) against them all time only. Portland has more wins against Seattle since LAFC entered the league. Make no mistake this is a heavyweight fight. These are also close games, and in close games a finishing can make all the difference Ruidiaz is set to miss out after an injury midweek, Carlos Vela should be available. That’s enough for me to side with the visitors but regardless what happens this will be must see TV!
New York Red Bulls vs Toronto
Toronto is a massive, massive underdog in this game. Granted they have not beaten New York in their last 6 games, and they are winless in 15 straight away matches. However, this is a team that has been close this season and is getting better and better ahead of a certain Italian’s debut. Red Bulls have also only won 1 of their last 6 games so it’s not like they are playing the unbeatable football they were early in the season. Maybe this ends up as a draw? Either way I expect goals, Toronto has not kept a clean sheet in 22 straight, that doesn’t look like it will end this weekend. 9.4 is way too big a number to be getting on a team that probably has a 20% chance or so to win. (Our metrics put it at 16.73%)
MLS Betting – Over 2.5 Goals Betting Odds
Columbus vs Charlotte
Imagine that… I have an opinion on the Charlotte game. I have two statements about this game. 1. Columbus is getting 1.79 odds at home
Charlotte has 1 point on the road this season, they’ve been outscored 13-4 on the road.
That’s all you need to know about that.
Chicago Fire vs DC United
Trivia question: which team has the top 2 scores in the MLS this season in goals per 90 minutes? Taxi and Ola Kamara have been very productive when available for DC, both should be available Saturday night. Additionally, Chicago has won 4 of the last 20 games against DC. Am I crazy to think we have a chance to steal some points on the road? Side note Kacper Przybalko has scored 6 times in 8 career matches against DC United. If you like the player to score bets maybe take a crack at that one.
Atlanta vs Inter Miami
Return of the King! Josef Martinez returned off the bench for Atlanta before the international break Atlanta is a whole different team with him in the Starting lineup. They have won 11 of the last 17 with him going from the start. Conversely they have won 2 of the last 12 when he doesn’t start. Miami has been playing really well with Drake Callender coming out of nowhere to be second in the league in save % while facing more shots per 90 than anyone else. He will need to stand on his head to keep Atlanta at bay and even that may not be enough. Thiago Almada does miss the next 3 with a suspension but we still like the 5 stripes to take care of business at home.
