Superliga Argentina: Week 6

Welcome to another column covering the Argentine league. In this edition we’ll try to give you some detailed insight regarding some of the most interesting upcoming games, so you can be more informed to place your bets. Let us know how you like this format! As always, thanks for reading!

 

Arsenal de Sarandi vs Veles Sarsfield

The match that kicks off this gameweek of Argentine football, we find one of the weakest teams in the championship in Arsenal, having won just one game out of five in the competition so far and without ever having shown themselves to be superior to their opponents. Beyond that, it is a team that is difficult to play against, as they take a very defensive attitude throughout the game. On the other side we have Velez, one of the best teams of the previous season, and one of the most highly expected at the start of this one, but who are nevertheless leaving a lot to be desired. Having won the first game of the tournament against the weak Aldosivi, they have not managed to get a win since then, and despite having important players they cannot impose themselves as we all would expect, it will be a matter of time for the team to regain the level that took them to the top of the charts last season. Having said all this, it won’t be an easy game but our clear favourite is Velez.

Rosario Central vs Barracas Central

Rosario Central is a very interesting team to watch, as from midfield forward they have a very competitive team, with the likes of Emiliano Vecchio and Marco Ruben. However, things change when we talk about the defense, it seems to be a completely different team on both fronts. Rosario has to work a lot on the defensive part and the associated game to be able to fight for this league cup. On the other side we find Barracas Central, who is the worst team in the tournament by far, who achieved promotion through corruption and match fixing, and has shown in these five games played so far not to be at the level of the first division, with a team full of semi-retired players who do not know each other. They got a win against another very weak team like Aldosivi, but that did not leave any certainty from the game and the attitude of the team. Bearing in mind that Barracas is the team with the best chance of relegation to the second division after only five games, and also bearing in mind that Rosario Central plays at home, Rosario is our big favorite to win the game.

Lanus vs Santa Fe

Don’t get carried away by the odds, this is perhaps the most hard fought match we will see this weekend, as it features two great teams who know what they are playing for and have clear initiatives. The home side, Lanus is a striking team full of experienced players, but is in a very similar situation to the aforementioned Velez, everyone knows the potential of the team, who have already shown in the last tournament to have what it takes to beat any opponent, but in this tournament have not yet managed to show the level that is expected of them. On the other side is Colon, who have won three of their last four league games. They are a team that has managed to adapt quickly to the idea of the game proposed by their new coach, the experienced Julio Falcioni, and have shown that they are ready to fight for this league cup, as they did in 2021. Having said that, we don’t think there will be a clear favorite in this match, maybe one of them will win by the minimum or it is also very likely that we could see a draw, but whatever happens we know it will be a very entertaining and interesting match to watch.

 

 

 River Plate vs Gimnasia La Plata

It is always a pleasure to watch River Plate play, and even more so when they play at home with all their fans, as they usually deliver at an elite level. Five games into the tournament, River has already managed to take the top spot in the leaderboard, and it is to be expected that this situation will not change until the end of the tournament. River has shown in the last few games that there is no one who can match their level, and that line for line they have the best players in the league. On the other side we have Gimnasia, that although they have been having very regular performances so far in the tournament, they will face a titan, and they will do it without their star player who has scored two goals in the last game, Brahian Aleman, as he has been suspended for one match for accumulation of yellow cards. Knowing all this and appealing to our common sense, we expect River to be able to find a convincing victory without too many difficulties.

 

Estudiantes vs Boca Juniors

Probably the most anticipated match of the weekend, we have Boca on one side, who although they are always held in high esteem as one of the most powerful teams in the country, they are leaving much to be desired with their last performances, getting only two wins in their last five games and not being able to keep a clean sheet in any of them. They have just lost 0-1 against Huracan at home in the last match they played, which puts them in a not so good moment from which they will have to work hard to get back to the level that characterizes them. On the other hand we have Estudiantes, and here we have a decisive factor that explains the odds, they played against Everton in the qualifying phase of the Copa Libertadores on wednesday, and they have to play the second leg next Wednesday so

the match against Boca will be played without most of their first team players, who will try to be rested to fight for their main objective, to qualify to the Libertadores. Knowing this, it is very likely that we will see a Boca win against a Estudiantes team with many absentees, but due to the level that Boca has been showing, they will have to make an effort anyway to get a good result.
