MLS 2022 Week 4 | MLS Betting Tips

Kris Brown – AKA MLS Card Guy – is our resident serious Major League Soccer expert.

Kris’s passion for the MLS really took off during the 2018 season in which he was a part of the team at DC United that opened Audi Field and welcomed Wayne Rooney to the MLS. He is now in his second season with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL. Kris likes to follow D.C United, Cincinnati, Seattle, and Atlanta.

His favorite player in the MLS is Luciano Acosta, but past favorites include Clint Dempsey and Kevin Paredes. The most iconic game he attended came at Audi field against Orlando in 2018, Wayne Rooney famously chased down an Orlando player who was racing towards an open DC goal, expertly tackled the ball away to save the draw, then unleashed a laser from midfield that Acosta headed in to complete the hat trick and seal the win.

Last week was a great week. We saw a few upsets, Charlotte nearly got their first point, and the Sounders and Galaxy played an early game of the year candidate. Now we move on to week 4. Here are some things to keep in mind as we go through this week’s picks.

CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Concacaf Champions League is inflicting its normal early season chaos on the standings. Colorado, who was lucky enough to get bounced early from the competition has rebounded, meanwhile NYCFC, Seattle, and New England all have 4 points or less from the first 3 games. The Canadian champions Montreal put up a really good fight in the CCL but it has really cost them in MLS play as they have lost 3 straight.

INTERNATIONAL BREAK

As many of you may know, there is an international break next week (mostly). 6 teams will still have matches during the break but all of the CCL teams will finally get a week off, which means we will need to treat the CCL teams differently when determining if they will rotate or not. Seattle is pretty likely to rotate as they played on Thursday and will be on the road again Sunday in Austin. NYCFC got through to the Semis on Tuesday, so we should see a mostly full team when they host Philadelphia. New England is at Charlotte and Montreal is at Atlanta, both teams will field as full as possible lineups I think, but New England especially is pretty banged up right now.

Now for a look at this weekends games

MLS Betting – Game Week 4 Preview

Cincinnati vs Inter Miami

Our model sees some value on the road team in Miami. I would lean a bit more toward the home team here. Cincy is working on its defence but it has never had issues going forward. At home I think they put a few past Miami and hold on for the win. This could certainly be a crazy game though so the real pick is the over 2.5. I do like BTS as well but you are getting more value with over 2.5. If you want to get really aggressive you could go for 3.5 or even 4.5 as this seems like a 3-2 or 3-3 type of game to me.

Atlanta United vs Montreal

To be fair Atlanta has not hit full speed yet, they are still sputtering a bit as they try to get everyone healthy and match fit. Surely the five stripes can handle a Montreal team that has been through a war in CCL and we don’t expect to be particularly high in the standings anyway. On their day Montreal could make this game interesting, but they need the international break to hit the reset button. Montreal have shown a ton of character and fight so if this game stays reasonably close that is probably why, but in the end even 75% of Atlanta should be enough to get three points in the Benz.

MLS Betting – Over 2.5 Goals Betting Odds

Charlotte vs New England

Long time readers of the column (basically means this isn’t your first time reading) know that we have been fading Charlotte hard so far to start the season. Each game Charlotte gets closer and closer to finally getting its first point. They will get it eventually, maybe this is the week? This really depends on how New England responds to Wednesday night’s shocking defeat. They could come out on fire and just overwhelm Charlotte, they are certainly the better team. Or they could come out flat just trying to get to the international break. Check the lineups before you bet this game, it’s possible NE could be missing Bou, Farrell, Turner and Kessler. That’s a bunch of firepower on a team that isn’t particularly deep to begin with. Either way Charlotte is pretty

resolute at the back. Carles Gil probably does a Carles Gil thing for a goal but outside of him there isn’t a ton of offense in this game. The pick here is the under 2.5. Maybe even Charlotte to win or draw if NE has enough guys out.

Austin vs Seattle

This game is one of those check the lineups games. I have a feeling Seattle is mostly out of gas after Thursday night in Leon. They do get an extra day’s rest as they play on Sunday but we may see a rotated Seattle here. Austin has become a dangerous team, especially at home so if Seattle does rest I think Austin makes them pay for it. The key guys here are Joao Paulo, Nico Lodiero, and Ruidiaz. If none of them play, it’ll be tough for Seattle to break down Austin. They may hit one on the counter but Austin is fully capable of making a tired defense pay multiple times.
