Here we are again to analyse the most relevant things that have taken place in the first week of competition of the exciting Argentine Superliga. In the following report we will be reviewing the Marquee Matchups and we will analyse how the most important teams performed, which teams stood out in a surprising way and on the other hand which teams disappointed. Keep in mind that this week each team played two matches.
River Plate 4 – 1 Patronato
After losing their first match of the championship 0-1 against Union de Santa Fe (as a result of a penalty wrongly called by the referee) the last champion of the league River Plate did what it is expected to do, win in an impressive way.
They started losing the game due to an unfortunate own goal by defender Paulo Diaz, but with the help of their star player Julian Alvarez (who scored a hat-trick) they were able to respond and turn the score around. It is worth mentioning that the fourth goal was scored by the new reinforcement of the team Juan Fernando Quintero, who was the hero in the memorable final against Boca in the Copa Libertadores in 2018. It is a very important result for the team led by Marcelo Gallardo as it shows that the first match of the championship was just a setback, and that the team continues to show the soccer level that led it to win the last league.
On the other hand, Patronato has a lot of room for improvement, a bad result that was expected due to the magnitude of the rival, but their game was still disappointing. A large part of the team changed from last season to this one, and that was demonstrated on the field, mainly by the lack of understanding among the players, especially in defense. Their coach Ivan Delfino has a lot of work to do, especially considering that in this championship the chance of relegation to the second division has returned, and Patronato is one of the main candidates.
It was a good match for Predictology members, with all the major value picks coming in, including the Home Win, Both Teams to Score and Over 2.5 and 3.5 goals.
Boca 1 – 1 Colón
A match between two great teams, both coming from being champions last season, Colon winning the Copa de la Liga and Boca winning the Copa Argentina. What looked like it was going to be a great football show ended up leaving much to be desired, as both teams tried to impose their way of playing but neither one of them were able to achieve it because of the pitch.
Yes, as crazy as it may sound, the playground played a leading role, it was in a deplorable state and the players could not give their best level for this reason. Boca was sanctioned for having such a disastrous pitch and was forced to play the next two home games in another stadium.Of the little that can be highlighted is that the striker Dario Benedetto returned to Boca, after a brief stay in Europe, and he did it in a great way, scoring the goal that put Boca in the lead. And when everything looked like it was going to be a victory for Boca, in one of the last plays of the match Colon managed to tie the game, it is worth mentioning that it was done by the hand of its star player Luis “el pulga” Rodriguez who gave a magical assist to Lucas Beltran, who put the final point on the scoreboard.
We know that these two teams, especially the powerful Boca, have much more to give than what they showed at the beginning of the championship, and we hope that they will show it in the games to come.
Rosario central 1 – 0 Vélez
Two of the most promising teams in this championship, both having won their respective games on the first match day of the league. Both teams have very good coaches and very solid teams, who know each other perfectly and know what they are aiming for.
They were ready to put on a great show.
It was a hard-fought match, in which neither team was able to overcome the opponent. The scoreboard opened after a free kick, after a rebound from a Velez player, Rosario defender Cristian Baez appeared out of nowhere to put a shot into the corner of the net. The result serves as a boost for the entire Rosario team, and after the match the captain and star player Emiliano Vecchio declared that they are focused on winning the championship this season.
Velez must not let this bad result alter them, they have a great team and they have shown that they have what it takes to be up to the challenge of any opponent they face. We hope that both teams continue on the right path and be protagonists in this season.
Argentinos Jrs 3 – 0 Newell’s
One of the great surprises of this beginning of the tournament was undoubtedly Argentinos Juniors, having won the two matches they played in this first week of competition and showing an amazing level inside the field. This has been developing since the preseason, where they won the 6 friendly matches they played.
The main highlights of Argentinos are their striker Gabriel Avalos, who scored two goals in this game and gave an assist, showing that he is lethal inside the box, and also the young midfielder Matias Alejandro Galarza, who at first surprised everyone by taking the place of the great Gabriel Florentin, without having ever played in the first division so far, but quickly showed why the coach gave him the place, dominating the midfield with only 19 years old and making the team work, even scoring the third goal in the victory. The future of Argentinos Juniors is certainly bright for the 2022 season.
On the other hand, Newell’s has a team in formation, with a large number of young players and a new coach, the experienced Javier Sanguinetti. With a lot of work and time, they have what it takes to be a team that can qualify for the international cups, but not aspire to win a championship.
The home win and over 2.5 goals was highly favoured by our AI Algorithm ahead of this match:
Defensa y Justicia 2 – 2 Racing
It seemed to be the ideal night for Racing, they started playing well and managed to take the lead thanks to their striker Gabriel Hauche, minutes later they were awarded a penalty that they were able to convert into a goal thanks to their star signing in this transfer market, Edwin Cardona. However, doubts in Racing’s midfield and defence, added to the intensity and the high level of Defensa y Justicia, who came from finishing second in last season’s league, made the local team equalise the score (even having chances to win it in the last minutes), finally ending the match in a draw.
Racing must start getting results fast, their new coach Fernando Gago is not convincing the fans with his slow and possession style of play, and evidently not convincing his players either as they have won only 3 games out of the 14 he has been in charge of the club. We must also bear in mind that two of the team’s best players are injured, goalkeeper Gabriel Arias who is due to recover in July this year, and defender Eugenio Mena who suffered a femoral biceps strain in his left leg last game and will be sidelined for a month. If they continue to perform like this, it is likely that the coach will be removed from his role in a short period of time.
On the other hand, Defensa y Justicia has a very promising team, which has been working for several years now with their good coach Sebastian Becaccece, finishing last season with a nine-game winning streak which led them to second place. Although they still have a lot of room for improvement, they are a team that plays very well and have high ambitions, as this year they not only intend to fight for the local tournament but also to compete in the Copa Libertadores. Without a doubt they are a team to take into account.
