Superliga Argentina: Top Clubs part 1
and the upcoming ones we’ll be trying to go over as many teams as possible, to understand a little bit better what’s going on with each time and their prospects for the season ahead. We’ll speak about rosters, transfer markets, the club’s game style and identity, key players and young prospects, projected rankings, relegation candidates, etc.
Velez Sarsfield
One of the most entertaining teams to watch. Velez’s coach, Mauricio Pellegrino (Formerly Southampton manager), has a clear way of doing things and this has given the team a strong identity, while delivering very good results.
Velez was a top 5 team in the league last season, and they earned a place in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.
They have a very intense and direct game style that can only be compared with River Plate’s. Their undisputed best player and Captain is Lautaro Giannetti, the 27 years old central defender has showed a great level last season and many teams were interested in acquiring him. He loves Velez and that’s why he decided to renew his contract until 2023. Another player to keep an eye out for is Luca Orellano, a 20 year old offensive midfielder and had some wonderful games in the 2021 season and Will most likely get a place in the starting team in 2022.
Unfortunately for Velez, on this transfer market they had to let go Federico Mancuello, who’ll be joining Puebla FC from Mexico, and the young star Thiago Almada, who Velez sold, for a good amount of money, to Atlanta United. These were two key pieces in the midfield and the coach will have to find some way to replace them.
This year Velez is going to try to win every competition they are into, and to be honest they have a chance and are a very decent candidate.
Barracas Central
We don’t blame you if this is the first time that you hear
about this particular team, this is the first time that Barracas will be in the top division for 87 years, and it’s important to keep in mind that Barraca’s 2021 campaign was full of controversy.
This team was benefited by many ‘questionable’ arbitral decisions and without them they wouldn’t have been promoted. To provide a little bit more of context, Barracas was in the 5th division a few
years ago and they have been promoted 4 times in the last 5 years.
This might seem hard to believe but there’s a catch, Barracas president is the brother of Claudio Tapia, the AFA president (Argentine Football Association), who is also involved directly in the club.
On the field, they aren’t a very strong team, they didn’t stand out in the second division, and we don’t think they will on the first one either. Some of their most important players are the experienced goalkeeper Maximiliano Gagliardo, the top scorer Mauro Albertengo.
Looking forward to this season, Barracas has been the most active club in the transfer market, signing a crazy high total of 11 players. We’ll have to wait and see if this is enough to achieve their goal for 2022 which is not to be relegated.
Since they have already reached first división, with their games being watched by thousands more fans around the country, they won’t be able to get those favorable calls anymore, but it will be interesting to wait and see if their football is good enough to stay at the top division.
Racing Club
Racing is one of the most important teams in Argentina, and in recent years they have managed to win a league title and battle hard in many international tournaments. Racing is well known for producing young and exciting teams, with many youth players debuting for the first team in recent years.
2021 was a very tough year for Racing since they were eliminated from Copa Libertadores quite early, and they then lost 2 national cups finals by several goals.
They ended in the 15th spot in the last league of 2021, which led them to a place in the upcoming Copa Sudamericana.
The team is still trying to adapt to the game style of their new coach Fernando Gago (former Real Madrid player), an offensive style with long possessions and quick passes. They are still struggling but once they adapt, they have the potential and talent to be a real threat.
The most important players are their goalkeeper, Gabriel Arias, who is currently injured and will be sidelined until June. The left back Eugenio Mena, who’s an international with Chile and their most recent signing, Edwin Cardona, former Boca player that fills a very important place in the midfield.
The young talents to consider are Carlos Alcaraz, a 18 years old midfielder, who has shown great talent and will be very important for Racing this year.
In our next article we’ll be turning our attention to the past and upcoming game week to give key insights to help Predictology users in their analysis of the betting markets.
Colon
Along with Boca and River, Colon was the only other Argentine team that got a title during 2021 as they were the champions of the Copa de la Liga. They took the whole league by surprise by playing a 5-3-2 system with high pressure that hasn’t been used very much before.
Colon had a great first semester in 2021 and it was mostly due to the level of their captain and best player, Luis Miguel “el pulga”Rodriguez, who left the club in June to spend the rest of 2021 in Gimnasia de la Plata, but has already signed a deal to come backto Colon for 2022.
This is great news for the club and the fans since they have their best player back to lead them a hand in the Copa Libertadores, a competition that Colon has not played in since 2010. This is a very big and difficult competition but Colon plan to do as much as possible to make their fans happy. Colon will also be competing in the league, but it’s unrealistic to believe that they have what it takes to succeed on both competitions, as their roster isn’t that deep and the high number of games in so little time will have an impact on the body of the players
The second semester of 2021 wasn’t as good as the first one, they came in 7th in the league and they finished the season without a coach, since Eduardo Dominguez left to pursue new opportunities. The new coach is Julio Cesar Falcioni, a very talented and experienced coach from Argentina.
The biggest promise of the club is Facundo Farias (19), who had a great season in 2021 and has raised interest from River, Boca, and Atlético Madrid (ESP), so far it looks like he’ll stay but if any of the interested teams raise the offer he could leave.
