Superliga Argentina: Top Clubs part 1
In this article and the upcoming ones we’ll be trying to go over as many teams as possible, to understand a little bit better what’s going on with each time and their prospects for the season ahead. We’ll speak about rosters, transfer markets, the club’s game style and identity, key players and young prospects, projected rankings, relegation candidates, etc.
River Plate
We’ll start at the top with last year’s champion, River Plate. Last year was great for River, getting a total of 3 different championships, with the most important one being the “La liga profesional”, which they won with ease. Early on they suffered a premature elimination from the Copa Libertadores, but this ended up working for the best, as Gallardo (the coach) was able to use all his best players on the national league without having to worry about resting the players and rotation.
This upcoming season River will again be trying to win all possible titles, but their main focus will be the Copa Libertadores.
The team is in one of the best shapes that it has been in many years and perhaps their best signing was tying Marcelo Gallardo down to a new contract with an extra year as the coach.
We can expect River to be at the top of the rankings in all the competitions they face, even with so many games being played in short windows of time, we can trust that River will remain dominant due to the talent and depth of it’s roster.
We will almost certainly see a River Team that’s even better than last year, as the club managed to keep most of their players while adding some pieces of oustanding talent.
So far we have the following confirmed signings: Juan Fernando Quintero (Shenzhen FC ), Leandro Gonzalez Pires (Inter Miami CF), Emanuel Mammana (Zenit) and Tomas Pochettino (Austin FC).
It’s also remarkable that River managed to keep (so far) their best player, Julian Alvarez, a 21 years old player that scored 18 goals and gave 18 assists last season (second highest combined number in the world for players his age or younger. Although he has signed for Man City in an eye-catching deal, he will remain with River as long as they remain in the Copa Libertadores, which could be as early as July and as late as September.
Some other great young players to keep an eye open for are Enzo Fernandez (21) and Santiago Simon (19), both midfielders finished last season in the starting eleven and, as Julian, were called up for the national team.
River is well known for their high pressure system, and they end up getting many clear chances from intersections in the opponent’s half field.
Boca Juniors
Right now Boca is going through a state of many changes. Their coach, Sebastian Battaglia, has less than a year of experience and the team is still trying to adapt to his game style.
Boca’s last year was pretty successful in terms of titles, they won the Copa Maradona (a one time only tournament), and
the Copa Argentina. However, Boca’s fans aren’t happy with the footbalistic level shown by the team, since they believe (and with good reason) that their game isn’t as good as it should be.
To explain this a little bit better its good to keep in mind that all of the important and decisive games that Boca won during 2021 were decided by penalties. For most of the games the team looked like a lineup of 9 defenders and a lone striker waiting for a miracle. That’s why we believe that Boca’s greatest challenge for this year will be to find a more clear identity as a team.
To achieve this goal, the authorities are working on getting as much players as possible to stay on the team, and to get some important new signings. So far they have signed some big names such as Nicolas Figal (Inter Miami CF) and Dario Benedetto (Elche Fc).
From the players that are staying, the most important (and talented) are the central backs, Carlos Izquierdoz and Marcos Rojo (Formerly of Manchester United), both of them have shown a superlative level last season, and were responsible for the success of this not so good team.
Boca also has some young players with a lot of potential that are already fan favorites, these are the midfielder Agustin almendra (21), and the left back Valentin Barco (17).
Colon
Along with Boca and River, Colon was the only other Argentine team that got a title during 2021 as they were the champions of the Copa de la Liga. They took the whole league by surprise by playing a 5-3-2 system with high pressure that hasn’t been used very much before.
Colon had a great first semester in 2021 and it was mostly due to the level of their captain and best player, Luis Miguel “el pulga”Rodriguez, who left the club in June to spend the rest of 2021 in Gimnasia de la Plata, but has already signed a deal to come backto Colon for 2022.
This is great news for the club and the fans since they have their best player back to lead them a hand in the Copa Libertadores, a competition that Colon has not played in since 2010. This is a very big and difficult competition but Colon plan to do as much as possible to make their fans happy. Colon will also be competing in the league, but it’s unrealistic to believe that they have what it takes to succeed on both competitions, as their roster isn’t that deep and the high number of games in so little time will have an impact on the body of the players
The second semester of 2021 wasn’t as good as the first one, they came in 7th in the league and they finished the season without a coach, since Eduardo Dominguez left to pursue new opportunities. The new coach is Julio Cesar Falcioni, a very talented and experienced coach from Argentina.
The biggest promise of the club is Facundo Farias (19), who had a great season in 2021 and has raised interest from River, Boca, and Atlético Madrid (ESP), so far it looks like he’ll stay but if any of the interested teams raise the offer he could leave.
